Senior QA Automation Engineer – AI-Driven, Flow-Based Testing (TypeScript + AWS) Purpose of Position We’re looking for a Senior QA Automation Engineer to be the first dedicated QA hire and the owner of quality across companys Admin Panel platform — a large NestJS/TypeScript backend (~871 endpoints across 150+ modules) and its Next.js operator frontend, spanning menu, franchise (Resto365), orders, payments, and loyalty.Today the platform has backend unit coverage but no automation above the unit level, and none on the frontend. As a senior, autonomous engineer you’ll set the strategy and build the backend, frontend, and end-to-end automation from the ground up, embedded in CI. This is a build-it-from-scratch role for someone who wants ownership, not a seat on an existing QA function.Crucially, we are not looking for someone to hand-write and babysit thousands of test cases in code. We want a senior automation expert who will build an AI-driven testing harness that derives and maintains its own coverage from business and user flows — so the suite tracks how the product is used, and the team spends its time on flows and outcomes, not on rewriting selectors every sprint. Our current stack includes: Technology we use | Current Stack | - Application Stack: TypeScript, NestJS, TypeORM/Sequelize, Next.js / React, MySQL / Postgres. - Test & Automation Stack: Jest, Supertest, @nestjs/testing, Playwright; React/Next.js component, visual & accessibility testing. - Cloud Technologies: AWS — containerised and serverless services including Lambda, ECS, SQS, SNS, S3, Aurora Serverless. - CI & Observability: GitHub Actions quality gates; Datadog and OpenTelemetry, plus AWS logging tools. - Auth & Integrations: Okta / JWT / DPoP; Braintree, Tyro, Uber Eats, Crunchtime, Yext, GrowthBook. AI Tooling & Automation | - Flow-driven harness: tests generated and maintained from business / user flows rather than hand-written test cases in code. - AI-assisted authoring & maintenance: draft tests from flows, specs, and recorded sessions, and keep them current as the UI and API change. - Self-healing & model-based: self-healing locators, model-based testing, and record-and-replay to sustain and expand coverage. - Evaluate & recommend: assess emerging AI testing tools against our AWS / TypeScript stack and make clear build-vs-adopt calls. Reporting to: Engineering Lead, Internal Tools (Digital Engineering) Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Responsibilities | Test Strategy & Ownership | - Own the end-to-end automation strategy — the pyramid, environments, test-data management across multiple datastores, tooling decisions, and reporting — documented and adopted by the team. - Build from the ground up — BE, FE, and E2E automation embedded in CI, setting the quality bar for a platform that has no automation above the unit level today. - Champion quality — in code review and release sign-off. AI-Driven, Flow-Based Test Automation | - Flows as the source of truth — model critical operator journeys and generate executable coverage from them rather than authoring isolated test cases by hand. - AI-assisted authoring & maintenance — use AI to draft tests from flows, specs, and recorded sessions, and to keep them current as the product changes. - Self-healing & resilient — self-healing locators, model-based testing, and record-and-replay so routine UI/API churn doesn’t break the suite. - Pragmatic & measurable — every generated test is reviewable, deterministic in CI, and earns its place against flake and signal metrics. Frontend & End-to-End Automation | - Playwright as the primary engine — operator journeys across the Next.js admin frontend with a clean page-object / fixture architecture and stable selectors. - Component, visual & accessibility — React/Next.js component tests plus visual and accessibility regression in the pipeline. - Full-stack journeys — E2E flows spanning FE → BE → DB → third party, including Okta/JWT/DPoP auth and multi-store state validation. - Backend API suite — Jest, @nestjs/testing and Supertest; contract- and mock-test external integrations (Braintree, Tyro, Uber Eats, Crunchtime, Yext, GrowthBook). Test Management, Reporting & Release Quality | - Traceability & defects — maintain requirement → flow → test → defect traceability and a live defect register; verify fixes and support UAT. - CI quality gates — GitHub Actions running regression on every PR, coverage thresholds, and fail-fast; quarantine and drive down flakes. - Live quality reporting — dashboards for pass rate, coverage, flake, and mean-time-to-detect via Playwright/Allure and Datadog CI/Test visibility. - Performance & load — add load testing for high-traffic paths and triage failures via Datadog / Open Telemetry. Collaboration & Ways of Working | - Work autonomously across time zones — with a dependable async reporting cadence with the Sydney team. - Document everything — so the team can adopt and extend the framework without you in the room. - Partner cross-functionally — with engineers, product, and stakeholders; break requirements into clear test plans and estimates. Essential Requirements & Behaviour Technical Foundation - 5+ years in QA automation with senior-level ownership of a test strategy and frameworks you built from scratch — not just extending an existing suite - Strong TypeScript / JavaScript, with hands-on automation at both the API and browser layers - Deep, hands-on Playwright (or equivalent), plus React / Next.js component, visual, and accessibility testing - API testing of Node.js backends with Jest and Supertest; NestJS a strong plus - Solid SQL and multi-store state validation; experience testing OAuth / OIDC / JWT-secured APIs - Hands-on with AWS and CI/CD (GitHub Actions); comfortable with containerised and serverless environments - Mobile test automation with Appium and AWS Device Farm — regarded, but not mandatory - Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience AI & Flow-Driven Testing Proficiency - Demonstrable experience building AI-assisted and/or flow-driven testing — AI-assisted generation/maintenance, self-healing locators, model-based testing, or record-and-replay - A clear point of view on driving testing from user flows rather than hand-maintained test cases in code - Responsible AI usage and quality assurance of AI-generated artefacts — reviewability, determinism in CI, and control of bias / false signal - Openness to prompt engineering and AI-enhanced testing workflows; building agentic harnesses on AWS (Bedrock) with TypeScript is a bonus Professional Skills - Exceptional written English; able to present complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences - Proven success working autonomously in a distributed / offshore team - Strong documentation and knowledge-sharing — able to enable the Sydney team to adopt and extend the framework - Mentorship capability on both traditional automation and AI-enhanced testing practices Certifications (Highly Desirable) - ISTQB or equivalent testing certification — desirable, not mandatory - AWS certification — highly desirable, not mandatory - Playwright / test-automation tool credentials, or demonstrable AI-tool expertise What Makes You Ideal You’re a senior automation expert who’d rather build a system that writes and heals its own tests than maintain a brittle suite by hand.
